Red rice or Jattu, as called locally, is a traditional rice variety grown in the mountains of Kullu and other parts of Himachal Pradesh. The red rice or lal dhaan variety has a red bran layer, which possesses antioxidant properties. Red rice also has higher iron and zinc content, more than white, brown or black rice, making this rice variety highly nutritious and tastier.
Once, only red rice used to be cultivated in the mountains of Kullu and it was also the most important staple food of the villagers. The entire cultivation process used to be nothing short of a celebration — from preparation of land to transplanting to harvesting.
It is said that even British settlers in Kullu were so fond of Jattu rice that they would send rice packets to their families back home in England.
