The origin of the desi cow ghee is as old as our civilisation itself. Besides becoming the inseparable part of the Indian food culture more than two millennia back, the cow ghee came to be regarded as sacred by our Vedic sages, who would use it in their rituals.

Various old Sanskrit texts describe the therapeutic qualities of cow ghee and even the word ‘Ghee’ has medicinal roots.  The ‘Ghee’ word has evolved from the old Sanskrit word ‘Ghrta,’ which means bright or to make bright. In our old Sanskrit texts, desi cow ghee has been described as an enhancer of memory, intellect, semen and ojas (vigor).

According to Ayurveda, desi ghee acts like a Rambaan (panacea).

In Charaka (Caraka) Samhita, one of the few ancient surviving Sanskrit texts on Ayurveda, desi ghee is regarded as an elixir with miraculous powers.

Here is how one shloka describes the qualities of old desi cow ghee in Charaka Samhita:

“Old ghee is alleviator of tridosa, particularly destroys seizures because of being pure; the ghee stored for 10 years is taken as old and destroys all grahas; there is nothing incurable for the ghee which is old by 100 years, it destroys all the grahas and is recommended for those suffering from epilepsy, grahas and insanity.”

Cow ghee as nectar

According to Charaka Samhita, cow ghee revitalises the body, mind and soul. A verse says that desi cow ghee is a food of the gods and compares it with nectar:

“This nectar-like ghrta is like ambrosia for the men. It promotes the body of those who have loss of semen, chest wound, are wasted, weak and debilitated by disease…”
