Top 8 Reasons why you must visit Sissu in April

Located near the Atal Tunnel and on the bank of Chandra river, Sissu in Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh is a paradise for snow lovers. While by March, there is hardly any snow left in the near surroundings of Manali, but you can find Sissu, on the other side of the mountain walls, brimming with the white gold even in April.

While in the Kullu Manali valley it’s spring time in March-April and the fruit orchards are in full bloom, in Sissu, the snowy winters continue to attract snow enthusiasts. 

To cut the story short, here are the top reasons why you should visit Sissu in April.

1. To marvel at Sissu’s snowy mountains

If you want to view towering snow-laden Himalayan mountains at just an hour’s drive from Manali then Sissu is the best place to visit in the month of April. As soon as you enter Lahaul through the Atal Tunnel and drive down to Sissu amidst the tall white mountains, you know in your heart that it was a trip worth making.

2. To witness snow everywhere in Sissu

Unlike Sissu in the autumn when the beautiful Himalayan poplar trees are in bloom, it’s white all around here in April. The lake at Sissu is still frozen, the grounds covered with thick snow and whenever the wind blows it brings along and showers you with tiny snow droplets.

While the plains already start to boil with heat by April but here in Sissu you can enjoy playing with the snow at the same time of the year. You can also go on a ride on the snow scooters or cross the Chandra river in one of the many zip lines that have recently been set up in Sissu.

The majestic waterfall of Sissu, which gets frozen in the winters, begins to take its former gushing self in April. The icy cold Himalayan waters springing out of the Sissu waterfall in a snowy mountain is a sight not to be missed.

The waterfall looks awesome in all he seasons but there is something really special about it in April. You can witness is for yourself. You can even get closer to it by crossing the Chandra river using one of the zip lines.

The Chandra river, which originates at the Chandra Taal in the Spiti valley, flows through Sissu and merges with the Bhaga river at the nearby Tandi confluence.

With her both banks covered with thick layers of snow, the waters of Chandra river meandering through lofty white mountains appear deep-bluish in April. The river also appears to be at her most calmer self. By just being near such a beautiful sight can give you so much inner peace and joy.

6. To enter the awesome Atal Tunnel

To reach Sissu, you have to cross the marvelous Atal Tunnel, which looks amazing covered in snow even in April.  The Atal Tunnel, which is world’s longest highway tunnel (9.2 kms) above 10,000 feet, remains surrounded by heavy snow in April and it’s a sight not to be missed.

The mountains from Manali till Atal Tunnel look simply amazing. It’s nature at her best.  You start getting snow on the ides of the road after Solang valley and by Dhundi near Atal Tunnel the entire landscape changes.

The snow-covered mountains are so near to you and the snow-covered valley below Dhundi bridge looks so awesome in April. Here you get to behold some of the best mountain sites while on your way to Sissu.

8. Better Road condition

Though the Atal Tunnel has made Lahaul Spiti in general and Sissu in particular accessible almost throughout the year but driving down to this winter land is not advisable in winters.

The road becomes slippery due to formation of ice and there is always a danger of avalanches striking down all the way from Atal Tunnel till Sissu and beyond. However, by April, the road conditions are much better with no risk of avalanches and you can visit Sissu without any hassles.
