Kasauli brewery is Asia's oldest brewery. It was set up in 1855.

Kasauli brewery was established by Edward Abraham Dyer, the father of Reginald Edward Dyer.

THE BUTCHER
Reginald Edward Dyer aka General Dyer had another nickname — ‘Butcher of Amritsar.’

Jallianwala Bagh
General Dyer had ordered the army to fire into a crowd of unarmed civilians in Amritsar’s Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919.

COOL KASAULI
Edward had chosen Kasauli due to its cool climate and abundance of spring water.

SECOND ATTEMPT
It was the second attempt to start a brewery in Kasauli. First one had failed in the 1840s.

LION BEER
Edward’s brewed beer, produced in Kasauli and branded as ‘Lion Beer’ was an instant hit. Lion beer was also the first beer brand of Asia.

MURREE BEER
Edward was also the manager of Murree Brewing Company, which produced the popular Murree beer.

Enters Meakin
In 1887, Edward sold Kasauli brewery to his rival H G Meakin. The company name was changed to Dyer Meakin Brewers Ltd.

N N Mohan
After Indian independence, Narendra Nath Mohan bought the Dyer Meakin breweries.

Drop the Dyer
In 1966, the company’s name was changed to Mohan Meakin by dropping the word ‘Dyer’ after Jawahar Lal Nehru refused to visit it due to its ‘Jallianwala connection.’

Mohan Meakin
In 1980, the word brewery was also removed as the beer production had stopped by then. Now the company name was Mohan Meakin Ltd.
