Oldest Dynasty

The royal family of Kangra (now erstwhile) traces its roots to King Susarma Chandra, who is believed to have ruled over Multan and took part in the Mahabharata war.

Amputated Noses

In the old days when amputation of noses was a common punishment, Kangra had emerged as the centre for treating disfigured faces.

A Palace for Jahangir

Mughal emperor Jahangir wanted to build a summer residence in Kangra valley. An announcement was made and location chosen but the palace was not built.

Nurpur and  Nur Jahan

The erstwhile Kingdom of Nurpur was known as Dhameri before its name was changed to Nurpur to honour Nur Jahan, the wife of Jahangir, in 1620.

Kangra fort

Believed to have been built at the end of the Mahabharata war, Kangra fort once symbolised the power and influence in the hills and was attacked over 50 times by the invaders.

Last Great King

Known as the last great King of the Chandra clan, Sansar Chand Katoch tried to restore the ancient Trigarta kingdom of his forefathers. His reign is called the ‘golden age of Kangra.’
