The historic Malaun Gorkha fort was built between 1804-1814 during the rule of Gorkha army in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
Malaun fort is located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.
It was here that the final battle between the British and Gorkha armies was fought for the Himachal hills in 1815.
It was at the Malaun fort that legendry Gorkha warrior Bhakri Singh Thapa had died at the age of 74 while fighting off British guns and cannons with a single sword in his hands.
After his defeat, Gorkha army commander Amar Singh Thapa had surrendered to British forces, led by David Ochterlony, at the Malaun fort in 1815.
The same year the first Nasiri battalion of Gorkha soldiers was formed by the Britishers at the Malaun fort. It’s now known as the First Gorkha Rifles or The Malaun Regiment.
But today, the Malaun fort is in ruins, thanks to sheer government apathy.
Its outer walls have either completely collapsed or are crumbling. Inside, a temple is being built at the fort site.
The under-construction temple has slowly taken over what remains of the fort now.
A temple gate has been built at the fort entrance.
If nothing is done now, this historic fort or what remains of it will be lost forever in the near future.
